What the hell is wikipedia?

Hi lovely people of the Casa.
As a Wikipedia worshiper, I was really interested into meeting the great priests, rabbis and imams of my beloved religion.
If you are curious you can take a look on http://wikimania2009.wikimedia.org/wiki/Schedule
It's a bit hard for me to give a description of the conference, I guess that it look a bit like all those free culture gatherings, a majority of male-westerners-young-geeks with the same cultural codes talking together. But still, there is a real focus onto spreading the free culture into the third world. For exemple, I met an Indonesian guy who told me that an agreement was found with the Tropen Museum from Amsterdam (a museum that I highly recomend you to visit )to release hundred of thousand of pictures of former Dutch East Indies under free licence. The hope is that in the following years, the "third-world languages" wikipedias such as Hindi, Arabic or Swahili are gonna grow and fill the existing gap with the others wikipedias. The Wikimedia fundation is going to direct its efforts into this direction.

I was also extremly glad to see that people from the Israeli and the arabic wikipedias where sharing a lot together.

Also, I love Buenos Aires, I feel at home there, definitely. People are extremly friendly and welcoming, the parties are amazing. Weather is just fine. I'm following a non vegetarian desintoxicating diet based on beef meat after my long vegetarian stay in casarobino;). Trying to understand more the interesting story of this region. I'm also preparing myself to seriously hit the road, with the thumb of course.

@Vale: I was indeed thinking

@Vale: I was indeed thinking of you when listening this conference: http://wikimania2009.wikimedia.org/wiki/Proceedings:101
It is about how museums and Wikipedia can have a fruitfull cooperation. If you have some time watch the video. (maybe you'll see my little head?) I will take a look on your links when I'll have more time.
@Laura: You can indeed make money with free content, ask Bobby, he will be happy to explain you how;)

Open free archives

My thesis is partially on these themes: it is plenty of projects around pushing to open up archives, even making people able to remix sources.

Since I've arrived in Europe/Casa realm, I've really changed my attitude towards free culture. After several years of business school and being pounded with intellectual property law, I am happy to learn of tangible success with free culture (tangible not meaning profits). An argument towards patents, copywrites, etc. is the lack of incentive to create, but somehow it works. This is a foreign idea for me, and I'm quite open minded to learning.

Anyway, glad things are well. Happy Hitching! Remember, if things are lonely on the roadside, just start waving to the drivers.
