Largescale Hitchhiking on San Francisco Bay. sort of.

I just heard about a largescale hitchhiking-ish movement in the Bay area, called "Casual Carpool." Named something of which Americans won't be terrified (because hitchhiking is scary), Casual Carpool is a great way to miss the $7.50 (minimum) round-trip charge to get across the bay into San Francisco. Meet-up spots are all over the "East Bay" to help people get across the bay bridge to and from the meet-up spot in the "West Bay," (San Francisco), where I guess we use public transit (or in my case, my fold-up bike).

Also, some of my friends just voted to increase the tax on marijuana in Oakland, California. They can do that?

The Bay area is really pretty nice - you should come visit.

[edit: links updated, and unfortunately it seems Casual Carpool is primarily for people who work a weekday, daylight schedule - in to San Francisco in the morning, back to the East Bay (where the rent is cheap) in the evening. There is a sign on the SF side saying something like "Casual Carpools here, 3p-7pm Monday-Friday"... I haven't tried hitchhiking there another time. Back to paying the $2 for the trans-bay bus ride, I suppose...]

too true

damn right george, can't wait to get back and catch up. My new 'fly back date' is Nov 8th...

Sweet info about the carpool stuff too, are the spots to Berkeley/oakland area, or across the golden gate... or both? I tried to find info to head north across the bridge without a car, but couldn't find much about it. Anyway, glad the hitching is getting it going :)

Let's bike it up soon!! After two months off the bike (my Juno, how i miss her so!) I'm going to spend hours a day just riding and getting back up to fitness :) San Fran hills will be the perfect place!

Sorry, Lily, it looks like Casual Carpool is just East Bay right now (and only for standard work-time commuters, it seems), so all across the Bay Bridge, rather than the Golden Gate.
