Eine Genossenschaft (oder Kooperative) ist ein Zusammenschluss von natürlichen und juristischen Personen (Personenvereinigung), die sich gemeinsam unternehmerisch betätigen (genossenschaftlicher Geschäftsbetrieb). Die genossenschaftliche Organisationsform, deren Charakter mit den Prinzipien Mitgliederförderung, Selbsthilfe, Selbstverantwortung und Selbstverwaltung (sog. S-Prinzipien) und Identitätsprinzip (Identität von Entscheidungsträgern, Geschäftspartnern und Kapitalgebern) umschrieben werden kann, ist ein Zusammenschluss von Personen, die gleiche oder ähnliche wirtschaftliche, soziale oder kulturelle Interessen gemeinsam verfolgen.

The Statute also enables 5 or more European citizens (physical persons) from more than one Member State to create a European Co-operative Society. As such it is the first and only European company form which can be established from scratch and with limited liability.
