Heavy Hand, Sunken Spirit is a project about the social costs and consequences of Mexico’s violent drug war. It frames the violence as a symptom, as opposed to the problem, and one of a variety of symptoms that will haunt the country for generations. In this picture, Central American migrants ride on top of freight trains through Mexico to reach the northern border, where they will attempt to cross into the United States. These migrants have become to fall under increasing dangers from the drug cartels and common criminals, as kidnappings and robberies have been skyrocketed in recent years. It is estimated that as many as 10,000 migrants were kidnapped in 2009.
Don Bartletti had made a wonderful photo essay of undocumented Central American youths traveling to the USA. +
