The Saturday quake was 1,000 times more powerful than the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that caused more than 200,000 deaths in Haiti last month. So strong was the first quake on Saturday that it brought down big buildings, hotels and houses in Santiago and knocked out a major bridge connecting the northern and southern parts of the country.
